Should we be following New York's cunning rodent control plan – and getting rats drunk?

It’s no secret that there are a lot of rats in the UK and especially cities like London. It is a problem that can have catastrophic effects on humans and their health and is a problem that needs to be dealt with. There are many ways to deal with a rodent problem but New York City have been dealing with their rat problem in a very different but effective way.

Pest controllers in New York have basically decided to make rats ‘drink themselves to death’. The Ekomille is a battery operated machines which attracts rats with bait, which triggers a trap door and drops the unlucky rodent into a pool of alcohol-based liquid. This trap can hold up to 80 rats and any one time.

In the UK the problem is nowhere as bad as in the US and in particular New York City, however, drowning in cheap, strong alcohol surrounded by strangers sounds like the perfect send off for a London rat – like after works drinks on a Friday for most Londoners.
